I am not a musician and by no means an expert on the quality of guitar playing but Colin Godbout might actually be The Greatest Guitarist in the World. This hour mini-concert is well suited to the new APK and Colin does a wonderful job bringing us along from Django Reinhardt to Jimmy Page and Eric Clapton. He seeks to educate us, lead us to understand, and most importantly to make us appreciate the masters of six strings.

Colin is absolutely a talented guitar player and he sings reasonably well. The show is about music and it takes centre stage with basically no narrative and little speaking to be had. This is not a show designed to be watched in the traditional sense. I found it the most fulfilling with a beer in hand and my eyes closed, letting the music take over. It reminded me of the kind of programming you’d hear on CBC radio with the occasional fact and background story about a piece of music, and Colin’s smokey voice crackling over the microphone seemed to extend this feeling.

I wished Colin had told his audience they should feel free to chat quietly or grab a beer because I felt it would have added to his performance, the ambience of an intimate late night bar, with a few people conversing in the corner. If a story is what you seek, this show is not for you, but as far as music goes you really couldn’t ask for much more. Grab a beer and a couple of friends and go see for yourself who the greatest guitarist in the world really is. Whether you choose Django, Chet Atkins, Lenny Breau, Clapton or Page you’ll love Colin. He’s a great way to end your evening of Fringe, chill, mellow out and let yourself get lost in the notes then stick around for the  No Show.
